How to Create a Home Safety Checklist

The dryer vent is one of the most overlooked fire hazards in residential homes. Lint buildup in the vent line is a leading cause of house fires. Clean the vent at least once a year, more often if the dryer takes more than one cycle to fully dry a load.

Electrical safety

An electrical panel in good condition with correctly rated breakers for each circuit is the foundation of home electrical safety. Breakers that trip frequently, a panel that feels warm to the touch, or any burning smell near the panel are signs that need professional evaluation immediately.

Extension cords used as permanent wiring are a fire and shock hazard. An extension cord is a temporary solution. If a permanent outlet is needed somewhere, have one installed. Overloaded extension cords and power strips are one of the most common causes of residential electrical fires.

Ground fault circuit interrupter outlets, known as GFCI outlets, are required by code in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor areas where water and electricity may come into contact. These outlets have test and reset buttons on the face. Test them monthly by pressing the test button, which should cut power to the outlet, then pressing reset to restore it. If any GFCI outlet fails to trip when tested, replace it.

Tamper-resistant outlets in all areas accessible to children. Standard outlet covers are better than nothing but tamper-resistant outlets, which require simultaneous pressure on both slots to allow insertion, are the safer long-term solution.

Water and plumbing

Know where the main water shut-off valve is and confirm it operates correctly. In a plumbing emergency, being able to shut off the water immediately limits damage significantly. If the valve hasn’t been turned in years, turn it off and back on to confirm it isn’t seized. A seized shut-off valve is a problem that only becomes apparent when it’s urgently needed.

Check under sinks, around the base of toilets, and around the water heater for any signs of moisture, staining, or active dripping. Small leaks cause significant damage over time and are easy to miss until the damage is already done.

The water heater temperature should be set to 120°F. Higher temperatures increase scalding risk, particularly for children and elderly household members, and accelerate sediment buildup inside the tank.

Check the water heater for rust, corrosion, or moisture around the base. Most water heaters last 8 to 12 years. A unit approaching the end of its lifespan that shows signs of corrosion is worth replacing proactively rather than waiting for a failure.

Structural and environmental

Check the roof, gutters, and attic annually for signs of damage, leaks, or pest activity. Water staining on ceilings or walls inside the home usually indicates a roof or plumbing issue that has been present longer than it appears. Addressing it early costs significantly less than addressing it after the damage has spread.

Inspect the foundation and basement walls for cracks, moisture intrusion, or efflorescence, the white mineral residue that appears where water has been moving through masonry. Small cracks are common in older homes and are often cosmetic. Horizontal cracks in basement walls or cracks that are widening over time indicate structural movement that needs professional evaluation.

Check weatherstripping and caulking around windows and doors annually. Deteriorated seals let in moisture, reduce energy efficiency, and in some climates create conditions for mold growth inside wall cavities.

Security

Exterior door locks should be deadbolts with at least a one-inch throw bolt. A doorknob lock alone is not adequate security on an exterior door. Check that all exterior doors close squarely in their frames and that the strike plate is secured with screws long enough to reach the door frame stud rather than just the door trim. Three-inch screws in the strike plate make the difference between a door that holds and one that fails under force.

Sliding glass doors need a secondary security measure beyond the built-in latch, which is easy to defeat. A cut-down wooden dowel or a purpose-built sliding door bar in the track prevents the door from being forced open from outside.

Exterior lighting on motion sensors around entry points deters opportunistic intrusion and makes the home safer to navigate at night.

Check window locks on all ground-floor and accessible upper-floor windows. A window that won’t latch securely needs the latch replaced or a secondary pin or stopper installed.

The quarterly review

Once the full checklist has been addressed, a brief quarterly check maintains the baseline.

Each quarter: test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, check fire extinguisher pressure gauges, test GFCI outlets, check under sinks for moisture, and do a quick visual on any areas that have shown issues before.

Annually: replace smoke detector batteries, inspect the dryer vent, check weatherstripping and caulking, inspect the roof and gutters, and look at the water heater and main shut-off valve.
