The blue dye and added fragrance don’t clean anything. The DIY version uses rubbing alcohol as the solvent and vinegar as the mineral deposit remover, which covers the same ground without the additives.
The alcohol content is what separates an effective glass cleaner from a vinegar and water solution alone. Vinegar and water cleans glass adequately but dries more slowly and is more prone to streaking than a formula with alcohol. The alcohol in this recipe evaporates fast and is what produces a streak-free result.
Variations based on what you have
If you don’t have rubbing alcohol: A vinegar and water mixture in a 1:1 ratio works reasonably well, particularly for mirrors and interior windows that don’t have heavy buildup. It’s more prone to streaking than the alcohol version and takes longer to dry but still outperforms wiping with a damp cloth alone.
For extra streak resistance: Add a drop of dish soap to the formula. A single drop, not more, breaks down any grease or residue that the alcohol and vinegar don’t fully cut. More than a drop leaves a soapy film that causes streaking.
For a light scent: A few drops of essential oil can be added without affecting cleaning performance. This is optional and purely cosmetic.
Application makes as much difference as the formula
The cleaner matters less than how it’s applied. The most common cause of streaky windows is technique rather than the cleaning solution.
Spray the cleaner onto a microfiber cloth rather than directly onto the glass. Spraying directly onto windows, particularly exterior windows, lets the solution run into corners and along the frame where it leaves residue and drip marks.
Wipe in an S-pattern from top to bottom rather than in circles. Circular wiping moves residue around rather than removing it. The S-pattern clears each section in one pass without going back over areas already wiped.
Use a separate dry microfiber cloth to buff any remaining streaks immediately after wiping. A single cloth used for both applying and buffing transfers residue back onto the glass.
Avoid cleaning windows in direct sunlight. The solution evaporates too quickly and leaves streaks before it can be wiped away. Early morning or overcast conditions produce better results.
What surfaces this works on
Windows and mirrors are the primary use. The same formula works on glass stovetop surfaces, glass shelves, glass cabinet fronts, and shower doors with light soap scum buildup.
It is not appropriate for anti-reflective coated screens like laptop or TV screens since the alcohol can damage certain screen coatings over time. Use a dry microfiber cloth or a cleaner specified for electronics on those surfaces.
